About the Shrug Emoji
The shrug, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, is the internet's way of saying whatever, I don't know or it is what it is. The face in the middle is ツ, the Japanese katakana character tsu, which looks like a smiling face. The arms are a macron, a backslash, underscores and a forward slash.
Some apps, including Discord and anything that uses Markdown, treat the backslash and underscore as formatting and swallow the left arm. If that happens, copy the Discord version below. It has extra backslashes, so the arm shows up after you post.

Shrug Emoji FAQ
- What is the face in the middle of the shrug?
- It is ツ, the katakana character tsu. Its shape looks like a smiling face with closed eyes.
- Why is my shrug missing an arm?
- Apps with Markdown formatting use the backslash to escape the next character, so it disappears. Use the Discord version, which adds extra backslashes so one survives. Discord also has a built-in /shrug command.
