About the Story Starter Generator

A story starter is the opening line itself, not a summary of the plot. These are built from a moment in time, something that happens, and a hook that makes you want the next sentence, which gives you lines like on the last day of school, a door appeared in the hallway, and everyone pretended not to notice.

Teachers use story starters for morning writing, and writers use them to warm up before working on something real. Add a place of your own to set every line in the same world.

Example story starters

  1. The morning after the storm, a light came on in the empty house, and I had ten minutes to decide.
  2. The day the letters stopped arriving, the clock ran backwards, and I still cannot explain why.
  3. my sister finally told the truth, and everyone pretended not to notice.
  4. a stranger knocked, and the rules changed that night.
  5. a train stopped where there was no station, and nothing was the same after that.
  6. The week the town lost its name, the phone rang from an unknown number, and nothing was the same after that.
  7. The night the power went out, the tide left something behind.
  8. The morning after the storm, a door appeared in the hallway, and I still cannot explain why.
  9. The week the town lost its name, a train stopped where there was no station, and I had ten minutes to decide.
  10. The morning after the storm, the dog refused to go outside, and the rules changed that night.

What makes a strong opening line

  • Put something specific in it: a time, a place or an object.
  • Hint at a change. Something should be different from yesterday.
  • Keep it short. A long first sentence asks for patience you have not earned yet.
  • Raise one question the reader wants answered.

Story Starter Generator FAQ

What is the difference between a story starter and a writing prompt?
A story starter is the actual first line of the story. A writing prompt describes a situation and leaves the wording to you.
How do teachers use story starters?
As a five or ten minute warm-up. Students copy the line, keep writing from it, and read the best ones out loud at the end.
