About the Emoji Mosaic
An emoji mosaic rebuilds a picture out of emoji. The tool divides your photo into a grid, measures the average color of each square, then finds the emoji whose own average color is the closest match. Step back from the screen and the picture reappears.
You can download the result as an image, or copy it as plain emoji text. The text version is the fun one: paste it into a chat and the whole picture arrives as characters. It works best under about 30 emoji wide, and in apps that use a fixed-width font.
Pick a set to change the mood. Color blocks give the cleanest, most poster-like result, faces make everything chaotic, and hearts turn any photo into something you would send on Valentine's Day.
How to use it
- Upload a photo.
- Set how many emoji wide the mosaic should be, then pick an emoji set.
- Download the image, or copy it as emoji text to paste into a chat.
Tips for a recognizable mosaic
- High contrast photos work best. A dark subject on a light background is ideal.
- Faces need at least 40 emoji across to stay readable as an image.
- For the text version, stay under 30 wide so lines do not wrap in chat.
- Color blocks are the most accurate set, since their colors are flat and even.
- Transparent background lets you drop the mosaic onto a colored post.
Where emoji mosaics work
- Discord and Slack messages, using the copied text
- Comment sections and group chats
- Profile banners and post backgrounds
- Birthday messages built from someone's own photo
Emoji Mosaic FAQ
- Why does my emoji text look wrong when pasted?
- The app you pasted into is using a font where emoji are not all the same width, which breaks the grid. Chats that use a fixed-width font, or a code block, keep the alignment.
- Can I use my own emoji set?
- Not yet. You can pick between mixed, color blocks, faces, hearts and food, and each set is measured for color before matching.
- Does the photo get uploaded?
- No. The mosaic is built in your browser and the photo stays on your device.
