About the Fake Update Screen

Nothing causes quiet despair like an update screen that appears when somebody is in a hurry. This page fills the screen with one, complete with a spinner, a slowly rising percentage and a message telling them not to turn off their computer.

The percentage climbs quickly at first and then crawls, the way real ones do, and it stops just short of finishing. You can rewrite the message, change how fast it moves, and pick between the blue update screen, a Mac style installer and a full blue screen of death.

It is a web page and nothing more. No update is running, nothing is being installed, and Escape closes it instantly.

How to use it

  1. Edit the message and progress speed if you want to.
  2. Press Go fullscreen and hand over the screen.
  3. Press Escape to exit when the joke has landed.

Prank responsibly

  • Only use it on someone who will find it funny, and end it quickly.
  • Never use it on a work machine during something important.
  • Say it is a prank as soon as they react, before anyone calls IT.
  • Escape always exits, so nobody is ever stuck.

Fake Update Screen FAQ

Does this actually update anything?
No. It is a picture of an update screen on a web page. Nothing is downloaded, installed or changed on the computer.
How do I get out of it?
Press Escape to leave fullscreen, then close the tab as normal.
Does the progress ever reach 100 percent?
No, it stops just short, which is the entire joke. Restart progress sets it back to zero.
